to get out of bed...

FYI: This post is not for everybody. We're talking about a sensitive subject. Okay, let's be honest, we're talking about poop.

*****************************************************************

I understand pooping is a bodily function. It's natural and stuff, blah blah blah. And actually, I should be happy Abbigail is pooping. In the past, she has been a very constipated baby. So poop should equal a happy dance. But in the past few weeks, I have gone from changing one poopy diaper every 3-4 days to changing 3-4 poopy diapers every day. That would be just fine with me, except the majority of these poops happen right before naps, and bedtime. It doesn't matter if I let her cry for one minute or ten minutes, I can almost guarantee she will have a poopy diaper. It happens 95% of the time.

SHE DOES IT TO GET OUT OF BED!

My sweet baby has figured out, that if she poops, we will get her out of bed and change her. What am I supposed to do? Tell her to "suck it up and go to bed" and if she poops, she will just have to "deal with it?"

How can I explain to her, "Look honey, it's time to go to bed. You can't just poop everytime you don't want to do something." If this continues, I can totally see her in the future pooping to get out of a homework assignment,  to get out of cleaning her room, or to get her schedule at work change. Okay maybe not to that extreme or maybe that's not an extreme?

It is the most bizarre thing ever. Has this happened to anyone else?

It's probably just a phase, right?

Don't let that cute face fool you, this girl is a poopaholic. I am at a loss. What do I do?

Will she just grow out of it?
This may sound like a joke, but I am quite serious.
Any advice?

  1. I haven't had that happen personally, but I would maybe try to put her on the toilet to see if that will stop it? Plus it would have the benefit of teaching her what the toilet is for. :)

  2. Try feeding her less solids before bed and naps. It's probably WHEN you feed her lol that gives her such impeccable timing. Give her more liquids? As long as she has a balanced diet. Also, what are you feeding her? Lots of poopy-foods (haha)? Extra carbs like crackers etc. are not going to be absorbed into her body and will just turn into waste. Try more whole/fruit/veggies foods that her body will use more like applesauce, pureed peas, babyfoods etc. I know that the rice cereals constipated Belle when we gave her too much so beware of that. Are her poo's chunky or are they pretty smooth? If it's chunky she could just be eating high-fiber foods she can't breakdown. Also, keep a poop journal (haha) of what she eats and of what/when she poos. Then you will know what triggers it and how her body handles it. Haha, she sounds healthy though :) If you let her cry, just be sure it's the poo in her diaper itself that she doesn't like and not that she's having difficulty pooing (like pain, tummy aches, allergies etc). Isabel, we found out, would wake up crying a lot when we gave her tomatoes and then poo. We found out she was allergic. Hope this helps!!! And hope you guys find sanity soon, lol. I know, aren't kids great? You two are great parents though. I'm sure you'll figure it all out.

  3. I have bad news;it doesn't get any better. In fact, it becomes a much bigger problem as the years go on. Just ask your brother.

  4. our kiddos always poop before naps or bedtime, and I just figure its because they are alone and relaxed and its usually dark in the room...I think a lot of babies/kids are like this- more prone to poo when they are comfortable :) I actually prefer this because its gets them n a schedule and I know that 15 min. after I lay them down that I need to go back in to change them. Sorry you are dealing with so much of it though! I hate changing #2 diapers...yuk!
